Shannon Bowers Bikes Natchez Trace Parkway To Bring Awareness For Barriers & Medians

Shannon Bowers, from Loxley Alabama, lost her only brother, Braden Bowers, in a February 2006 car crash on Interstate 10 in the Florida panhandle.

He swerved to avoid a car, slid across the median into oncoming traffic and was hit by another car. He died instantly.

To draw attention to the need for barriers in medians of four-lane and interstate highways, Shannon Bowers is bicycling the entire length of the Natchez Trace Parkway.

Every highway patrolman has said if there had been a median barrier ... my brother would have probably survived," said Bowers. Source

A Sight To See At Milemarker 437: A New Park!

Looks like they'll soon be adding something new to the Natchez Trace Parkway maps.

At milemarker 437, they've just started construction for an access ramp that will connect a new park (in Williamson County Tennessee) that is adjacent to the Natchez Trace Parkway near Highway 96.

Tips For A Daytrip On The Natchez Trace Parkway In Tennessee

Got an e-mail from Ray D. today. He writes:

I'm stationed at Ft Campbell, KY and would like to know the best way to tour part of the Trace on a Saturday or Sunday drive. Looking at directions from Nashville and just touring the portions of the Natchez Trace within TN with maybe side stops for lunch and or dinner or just snacks. Thanks for any feedback."

Following are my recommendations for a daytrip along the Tennessee portion of the Natchez Trace Parkway...

The First (And Last) Gas Station On The Natchez Trace Parkway

The very first (or very last, depending on which direction you're heading) gas station on the Natchez Trace Parkway is the Shell Station near the intersection of Highway 100 and the Natchez Trace Parkway.

There is also a cut-through to/from Bellevue using McCrory Lane, which intersects Highway 100 right next to the Shell Station.

Natchez Trace In Spring: Colorful Budding Trees

It's springtime on the Natchez Trace Parkway -- as evidenced by all the colorful budding trees on either side of the roadway.

Enjoy the colors...

Motorcycling The Natchez Trace: Everyone's Doin' It!

motorcycle-rider-tail-of-the-dragon.jpg With the warmer weather (we're seeing 70's during the day and 40's at night here in Franklin) and extended daylight hours (thanks to Daylight Saving Time being bumped up 3 weeks earlier), the one place that motorcyclists in Middle Tennessee flock to is the Natchez Trace Parkway.

But, the fact of the matter is... motorcycle riders from many different places are making their way to the Trace these days.

The Natchez Trace Parkway has become a leading tour route for motorcyclists from all over the country. Everyone wants to "ride the Trace" at some point in time!

The Natchez Trace Park Is Not The Same As The Natchez Trace Parkway

When I first moved to Tennessee, I was a little confused by this myself.

I figured there was only one Natchez Trace... Right?

Wrong!

In reality, there is a Natchez Trace Parkway and a Natchez Trace Park -- similar, yet different.

Traveling The Trace: A Book About The Natchez Trace Parkway By Cathy & Vernon Summerlin

traveling-the-trace-book.jpg According to one reader:

This is a "must" companion piece for anyone who drives the Natchez Trace, whether for 4 miles or 400. Without the book's detailed information about the Trace's history, the towns it runs through, and the many recreational opportunities along the way, the Trace would be just another road. The Summerlin's book and their subject remind us that life is indeed a journey, not a destination. Source
